Improving My Flaws With Practice

So one of my main flaws is taking too long for quick drawings, especially for skeleton layers in photoshop. As in my previous blog, that could be seen in my example of drawing a dragon in Photoshop. However, since the image of attempting a dragon, I have practiced drawing other animals. One animal I have practiced drawing quite often is usually dragons, especially when I have the time to put into drawing them. I have a mystical attraction to dragons as they are said to have lived 1000's of years in all of the fairy tales, and makes you wonder what stories are told within their eyes. Yes I know, this sounds all silly and childish, but dragons are so fun to draw! They can be any shapes or sizes, and if you have seen the film How to Train Your Dragon you'll know what I mean. However recently I have been drawing other animals such as cats, lions and even sharks. Below we see my drawing of a cat, first starting off with its base skeleton, and then shows the individual layers and the definition increase throughout them.

The first layer, is the skeleton layer, this is where I drew simple lines and shapes to make a rough building block to draw around. Once I was happy with all of the positions of the skeleton, I move on to layer 2, drawing a rough outline and slightly more detailed edges, showing where more detail was going to be needed for when I would go onto layer 3. In layer 3, even more detail was added, this detail involved the addition of whiskers, eyes, nose, mouth, and even the insides of the ears and the the individual toes on the feet received more details. These small but very important details help define what it is that I am attempting to draw, because without these details of layer 3, then layer 2 could of been any animal with 4 legs, tail and pointed ears. Definition is key to help show the design.
Taking my time as well as working faster with my skeleton layers has helped my overall drawing because it means I can have the longer time to spend putting in detail than the simple areas on the skeleton layer. There is still more work yet to be done, but this is already a step in the right direction in regards to improving my flaws.
